Blueprint for Small Home Approval

Navigating the Design and Certification Process of Small-Footprint, Permanent or Relocatable Dwellings

This research was prompted by the growing movement towards small footprint homes and the confusion experienced by many who are trying to simplify their lives or just have an affordable roof over their heads. Many find themselves in strife because they get advice from the wrong place (usually social media). Others find the rules don’t apply to their specific needs.

Jo Dickson explores the reasons people consider small footprint homes and what their main options are, e.g. a house on foundations, wheels or skids and who or what is standing in their way and why. Dickson outlines approaches to gaining approval,  offer a general guideline to common processes of gaining building approval in residential areas and suggest why Building Designers and Architects are the best equipped to guide you through the process from the outset.
