Retain, Repair, Reinvest: Barak Beacon Estate

Retain, Repair, Reinvest is a strategy for evaluating the refurbishment potential of existing public housing. Ensuring housing as a basic human right.

The state government has recently announced a tender for the development of Barak Beacon Estate despite no feasibility study being conducted into the refurbishment of the existing buildings. OFFICE working with the local residents have conducted their Retain, Repair, Reinvest strategy on the Estate as an alternative to the current demolition and rebuild proposal.

Having already completed a study at the Ascot Vale Estate this work has given the local residents proof of an alternative approach and a tool to advocate to the state government.

OFFICE would like to thank the residents of the Barak Beacon Estate for their time and support with this project. We’d also like to thank Miriam McGarry, Ben Hosking, Melbourne Quantity Surveyors, and Makao for their assistance and generosity in contributing to this design proposal. Finally thank you to everyone who donated to this project via the fundraiser, without this support the project would not have been possible.
The Alastair Swayn Foundation respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians on the land of which we work, the Ngunnawal people of the ACT. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture and pay respect to Elders past, present, and emerging.
