Lyndon Anderson announced as the new Swayn Fellow in Australian Design
The Alastair Swayn Foundation and the National Museum of Australia are proud to announce the appointment of Dr Lyndon Anderson as the new Swayn Senior Fellow in Australian Design.
The Swayn Senior Fellow in Australian Design is a collaboration between the National Museum, the Swayn Gallery of Design and the Alastair Swayn Foundation.
“The Foundation is thrilled with the appointment of Dr Anderson to the role. As the second Swayn Senior Fellow of Design, he brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in design education and curation to the Fellowship. Architecture and design are reflections of who we are, and it’s by exploring the objects and approaches to design in our lives, that we can explore and define ourselves. The Swayn Centre for Australian Design, led by Dr Anderson will seek to awaken curiosity and understanding about the inherent value of design” said Graham Humphries, Chair of the Alastair Swayn Foundation.
Selected from an exceptional field of applicants, Dr Anderson is an expert in design education, research and advocacy. He brings to the appointment his extensive experience and networks with industry peak bodies and the university sector. Dr Anderson holds a PhD in Design and Fellowships with the Design Institute of Australia, the Royal Society (NSW), and an Adjunct Professorship with the University of Canberra.
Dr Anderson hopes to highlight the work of important Australian designers of the past and the present, and help the next generation of designers to find their voice. He stated “I’m really looking forward to sharing stories behind icons of Australian design and architecture, and highlighting the work of renowned Australian designers. The program will give people the opportunity to learn about the place of design in our past, present and future, and explore how design contributes to culture and informs our lives”.
His focus for Australian design is to emphasise sustainable manufacturing and construction, and how architects and designers respond to climate change challenges within their practice. Dr Anderson plans to implement several projects during his tenure, including exploration of biomimicry in sustainable engineering and design, a new exhibition at the National Museum of Australia showcasing materials used in eco-friendly design, and a series of talks and discussions on contemporary Australian design.
National Museum Director, Dr Mathew Trinca, said “Australian design continues to have a global impact across many facets, including architecture, industrial design, fashion and the virtual design world. These disciplines will help us address modern issues such as climate change, the ethical use of new technologies and viable consumption. I am delighted to appoint Lyndon Anderson as the Swayn Senior Fellow in Australian Design”.
