The project AT HOME transformed a suburban Melbourne home in Wyndham for three days in December in 2023 into a dramatic art intervention, which hosted a series of public talks, events and programs that interrogated the home. This project was created and driven by a co-operative team “Common Collective” including Steve and Simon from OFFICE.
Common Collective is a multidisciplinary creative collective, founded in 2022 by Ian Strange and Jedda Andrews (Ian Strange Studio), Simon Robinson and Steve Mintern (OFFICE), Mashaka Gunnulson, Dr. Mathan Ratinam, Emma Pegrum, Dr. Rory Hyde (Melbourne School of Design), and Miriam McGarry (Hidden Cities).
Additionally, the project received support from Wyndham City, Creative Australia, and Creative Victoria.
The expansive, collaborative project, created an architectural intervention that converted the home into a vessel for public conversation and hosted a program of conversations within the home that focused on the concept of housing and diverse perspectives on the home – drawing on the history of the site and it’s occupants, the use of the domestic space and architecture.
The project explores artistic and curatorial approaches that move beyond the independent practices of Ian Strange Studio and OFFICE, to reflect the diversity of the broader community and the notion of home’s unique position in the Australian psyche. Through this diversity the project offers the design community an expanded set of strategies to engage with the housing crisis outside those traditionally within architecture.
The project is the first iteration of an ongoing series of site based interventions and conversations, that will leverage Ian Strange Studio and OFFICE’s international connections, situating the Melbourne and Australian design community within a global context. AT HOME is intended to be iterative, and will grow with the knowledge gained from creating each version of the project. While the physical site created an exchange of ideas, the project’s aim is to create connections between local and international discourse.
